Weekly Round-Up: News and Analysis on Women and Poverty (Week ending April 30, 2010)

Spotlight on Poverty and Opportunity, a national foundation-led initiative, is excited to collaborate with the Women’s Foundation to bring you the latest news and analysis on women and poverty. Spotlight is the go-to site for news and ideas about fighting poverty.

Here’s this week’s news:

· Kiana Miles, a 19-year-old single mother, and Elana Williams, 24 and recently homeless, tell the New York Times that they just finished a second week of work thanks to the newly initiated “Put Illinois to Work” program.

· The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports on the success of the “Healthy Babies Healthy Ladies” program, which was initiated to decrease infant mortality rates by offering free prenatal care to women who are impoverished or have been affected by domestic violence or substance abuse.

· According to the Associated Press, the U.S. Veterans Administration is creating new gender-specific facilities that will cater to female veterans, helping them confront issues of military sexual trauma and homelessness.

· The Kansas City Star profiles Anita, a young mother with no family who was given a support system by the Olathe’s Mother to Mother Ministry, which helps pregnant women who live in poverty or have been abused.
