Washington Area Women’s Foundation Announces New President

Nicola Goren, acting CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, to head The Women’s Foundation

Washington Area Women’s Foundation is excited to announce that Nicola (Nicky) Goren has been named president of The Women’s Foundation.   Following a methodical and thorough search process, the search committee — comprised of members of the board and community leaders — enthusiastically selected Nicky to lead The Foundation’s ongoing efforts to improve the lives of women and girls.

Nicky comes to The Women’s Foundation from the Corporation for National and Community Service where she most recently served 15 months as the acting chief executive officer.  A graduate of Brandeis University and Cornell Law School, she arrived in the Washington, D.C. area 18 years ago and is passionate about and committed to the Washington community.  She has also served as counsel in the Office of Compliance in the U.S. Congress and was assistant general counsel in the Congressional Budget Office.

“Nicky will be a tremendous asset to The Women’s Foundation,” said Deborah Gandy, chair of The Foundation’s board of directors.  “We were pleased to find such an outstanding candidate from within the Washington-area community.  She’s a visionary leader and brings to The Women’s Foundation her vast experience from living and working in the District for the last 18 years.”

Goren was chosen after a thorough five-month search process conducted by a committee of 12 led by co-chairs Carolyn Berkowitz, president of the Capital One Foundation, and Sandy Jibrell, board member and co-founder of The Women’s Foundation’s African American Giving Circle.  The search was conducted with the generous support of Teresa Green, senior recruiting director at Capital One.

Nicky succeeds interim co-presidents Jennifer Lockwood-Shabat and Stacey Miller.  They will remain at The Women’s Foundation as vice president of programs and vice president of development and communications, respectively

Nicky will begin her regular office schedule on June 1st.  In the interim, she’ll be learning about all the ongoing projects, plans and agendas already in place at The Women’s Foundation.  She’ll also begin attending some events that have been scheduled for this spring and says she looks forward to meeting members of The Women’s Foundation community.

“I’m very committed to this region and this community,” Nicky said.  ”The work The Foundation and its partners are doing to support women and girls is phenomenal.  I look forward to working with The Women’s Foundation’s remarkable Board, dedicated staff, and the broader grantee and philanthropic communities to expand The Foundation’s reach and continue to make a difference for women and girls in the Washington area.”

In the coming weeks, you’ll have more opportunities to hear from and about Nicky.  There will be more information about her in next month’s e-newsletter (click the link at the top right corner of this page to receive e-newsletters), and when she begins working a message board on this website will allow you to reach out to her directly.
