OUR MISSION

Washington Area Women’s Foundation is a community-supported foundation that invests in the power of women and girls of color in the Washington, D.C. region.

WHAT WE DO

Women and girls of color make change happen. While too often unsung, the work of women and girls of color have advanced human rights and gender, racial, and economic justice in our communities for decades. Our theory of change is that by increasing resources to, and recognizing the leadership of, women and girls of color, they will ignite needed change.

We open doors to opportunity, safety and security through:

Grantmaking

We make grants to organizations that are actively pursuing gender, racial, and economic justice, and we award women and girls of color directly.

Advocacy

We influence policymakers and the local philanthropic sector to advance systems and institutional change with a gender, racial, and economic justice lens.

“Staff at the Foundation have supported us by participating in our campaigns, providing training to our youth, and supporting our advocacy efforts. This is a unique level of support that has been crucial to us moving forward. If The Women’s Foundation did not exist, we would not be able to continue as an organization in the way we are right now. ”
