Here’s this week’s news:

• In a New York Times op-ed, Philip Levine argues that the current debate around abortion coverage by private health plans ignores that a disproportionate share of women who have abortions are too poor to afford insurance anyway.

• The Los Angeles Times highlights the cycle of abuse, neglect, and tragedy experienced by one low-income woman and her six children.

• The New York Times reports on the dramatic reduction of the racial gap in infant deaths in a county in Wisconsin.  Different explanations for local success combating a national problem include better prenatal care for low-income women.

• The Associated Press notes that Latina participation in the Girl Scouts has increased, including in low-income areas suffering from high rates of crime and teen pregnancy.
