Spotlight on Poverty and Opportunity, a national foundation-led initiative, is excited to collaborate with The Women’s Foundation to bring you the latest news and analysis on women and poverty.  Spotlight is the go-to site for news and ideas about fighting poverty.

Here’s this week’s news:

• The New York Times profiles Sheila Salmon, a volunteer at the Women’s Health Project Treatment and Research Center who has helped women like Deborah Dahl recover from abusive relationships and depression.

• Denise Wintz tells the New York Times about her struggle out of poverty after being laid off.

• The Ventura County Star interviews several homeless women, including Christina Smith and Andrea Houchin, who have children living with them in shelters.

 • Isabel Bermudez, who grew up in meager surroundings in a Bronx housing project but earned a six-figure income, now survives solely on food stamps after losing everything to the housing bust, according to the Boston Globe.
